Character and Citizenship Education
The school believes in providing a holistic education for every student. Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) is integrated into instructional programmes, co-curricular programmes and other learning experiences. The design and delivery of CCE lessons package and programmes in HS are guided by the school’s GREAT values and vision statement to nurture empowered, future-ready Hougeans of character and purpose.

While the CCE Curriculum Content is premised on the three big ideas of Identity, Relationships and Choices, and anchored on the teaching of core values and social-emotional competencies, to help students find a sense of purpose, these fundamentals are taught and applied in the following Curriculum Content Areas:

The school’s key CCE programmes include:

Values-In-Action, which is an important aspect of CCE in developing vital 21st century skills and social-emotional competencies. HS works closely with our long-term beneficiaries to provide opportunities for students to give back to the community.

Cohort Camps provide students with immersive and experiential learning opportunities to develop character traits of resilience and resourcefulness, as well as social skills such as collaboration and communication.

Educational Career Guidance (ECG) programmes which help students understand their Values, Interests, Personality and Skills, where they would like to go, and how to get there.

Citizenship Education activities, including NRIC CCE Lesson, NSmen Alumni sharing and commemorating the four key National Education events, National Day, Total Defence Day, Racial Harmony Day and International Friendship Day.

Character Coaching through Values-In-Action (VIA)
Sec 4 Class-Based VIA
Our Sec 4&5s produced plank artwork in resplendent colours for display
at the ‘Music in the Park’ community event held at Fernvale Park on 11
March 2023.


Sec 1-3 CCA-Based Learn-A-Skill Carnival CCAs brainstormed, planned, prepared and carried out activities for the carnival in Semester 1 which invited 7 beneficiaries. CCAs worked collaboratively to meet community/school needs.

What is ECG?
Education and Career Guidance (ECG) empowers students to develop purpose, self-awareness, and resilience. By fostering a growth mindset and adaptability, ECG equips students for lifelong learning and enables them to embrace future opportunities and appreciate the value of diverse occupations.
Education and Career Guidance (ECG) and Counselling Services are available by appointment in school on Tues and Wed (8.00 am to 5:00 pm) except HBL, School and Public Holidays. Requests for Online consultation is based on availability.

Student-Led Framework – SDEs are designed around the needs, interests, and aspirations of students. Our focus is on encouraging student engagement and expression, empowering them to take ownership of their Career and Education Guidance (ECG) learning.

Purpose Driven – SDEs are planned with specific learning outcomes in mind.

Adaptibility – SDEs enable students to connect, transfer, and apply learning across CCE ECG lessons as well as different key student development experiences.
