Important information for 2024 Sec 1 Students and Parents
Welcome to Hougang Secondary School (HS). The school would like to extend a warm welcome to all Secondary 1 students and parents. To prepare for the start of your secondary school journey with us, please look through the information below. Please click the underlined text for the details.
1. Online Registration Form
As part of Secondary 1 Registration, we would appreciate it if parents/guardians could take some time to complete this form by Thursday, 21 December 2023, 12 pm. This is to allow us to get to know your child/ward better.
2. Subject Based Banding (SBB)
If your child/ward is eligible to study subject(s) at a more/less demanding level, please attend the online zoom briefing on Friday, 22 December 2023 from 8.30 am to 9.00 am. Details will be sent via Parents Gateway (PG) on Wednesday, 20 December 2023, after 5 pm. Acceptance/rejection of the subject(s) offered will need to be submitted via the offer sent through PG before Tuesday, 26 December 2023, 12 pm.
3. Higher Mother Tongue Languages (HMTL)
(A) Parents of students offered HMTL by MOE will be notified via Parents Gateway (PG) on Wednesday, 20 December 2023 after 5 pm. Acceptance/rejection of the HMTL offer via PG must be done before Tuesday, 26 December 2023, 12 pm.
(B) Parents of students not offered Higher Chinese Language (HCL) by MOE but have attained at least a Merit in HCL or an AL2 or better at PSLE will be offered HCL by the school. Parents will be notified via PG on Wednesday, 20 December 2023, after 5 pm. Acceptance/rejection of the HMTL offer via PG must be done before Tuesday, 26 December 2023, 12 pm.

4. Purchase of Books, Uniform and PE Attire for Secondary 1
Method 1: Online Purchase (Preferred)
Method 2: Purchase/Collection at Hougang Secondary School Please follow the schedule below for the purchase/collection of textbooks and uniforms. We seek your understanding that only one adult is allowed to accompany each student.
* For Textbooks: You can view the booklist below or collect a hardcopy from the bookshop. Please choose the correct course (G1, G2 OR G3) for your child.
* For Uniforms: No trying on of uniforms will be allowed. Please bring the best fitting garment to compare when selecting the suitable size for purchase in school.
You can refer to the suggested quantity to purchase for uniforms:
Boys: 1 packet of name tags (Green), 1 school tie, 1 shirt, 2 school polo tees, 3 long pants and 2 sets of PE attire (2 T-shirts and 2 shorts).
Girls: 1 packet of name tags (Green), 1 school tie, 1 blouse, 2 school polo tees, 3 skirts and 2 sets of PE attire (2 T-shirts and 2 shorts).
5. Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS)
A. Sec 1 FAS approved by their Primary Schools: Parents/Guardians of Secondary 1 students whose MOE FAS application was approved by their Primary Schools will need to go to the HS General Office to collect your FAS approval letter from Thursday, 21 to Thursday, 28 December 2023 before 2 pm. You need to bring your MOE FAS approval letter from Primary School for verification. After receiving the FAS approval letter from HS, you can proceed to collect the textbooks and uniforms. Please refer to the schedule above for the collection of textbooks and uniforms.
B. New MOE FAS applicants: Please download, print, and complete this 2024 MOE FAS Application Form. You can also collect the form from the HS General Office during school operating hours from 9 am to 5 pm. Kindly ensure the form is completed and submitted with the supporting documents, to our staff in the General Office by Tuesday, 26 December 2023, 12 pm.
6. Personal Digital Learning Programme (PDLP)
The use of Personal Learning Devices (PLD) is a requirement for secondary schools. The PLD initiative aims to develop and strengthen the digital literacy of your child/ward. For important information and required actions relating to the PLD initiative, including financial assistance as well as purchase of the PLD, please refer to this link.
Do note that the submission of the online application includes the authorisation to use your child’s Edusave for the purchase of the PLD. It is important that these are submitted before Tuesday, 26 December 2023, 12 pm so that the school can initiate the procurement of the PLDs without delay.

7. Sec 1 Orientation & GREAT Start Week (Term 1, Week 1, 2 to 4 January 2024)
On Tuesday, 2 January 2024, your child/ward is required to report to the school hall (Level 2) in HS PE Attire by 7.25 am. You can view the Orientation Programme here. The schedule for GREAT Start Week will be sent to all parents and guardians via PG before Tuesday, 2 January 2024. Though there are no lessons for the first 3 days, students are expected to bring a working thermometer, stationery and water bottle for the activities planned for the week. In case of possible delivery delays for uniforms purchased online, Sec 1 students may report to school in their Primary School uniform for the first week of school, in this case, Primary School PE attire on 2 January 2024. 8. Updating of Contact Details in Parent’s Gateway (PG)
If there is/are any change(s) in your contact details (mobile, residential/change of email address) for the last 3 months, kindly refer to the instructions below.9. Appeal Matters (Transfer out of HS)
(A) For medical reason(s): Documentary evidence is required based on serious medical conditions or severe physical impairments. Kindly submit your request and supporting documents to our General Office staff before Thursday, 21 December 2023, 12 pm.
(B) For non-medical reasons: Please submit your intent to the other school. Once you have received the confirmed placement in the other school, you need to bring the MOE school transfer form, signed by the other school, and submit it to our General Office staff for processing.
* Please purchase your textbooks and uniforms only after confirmation of a placement in the school of choice.
